A self-determined life

The name contains her programme: Megan Rapinoe, the soccer, is simply "mega". In her sport she has achieved everything that can be won, she was a world soccer, she won two world championships and an Olympic victory with the USA team, won the Algarve Cup three times, and at national level she has always been at the forefront from her youth, "masterly" so to speak. From high school to college and university, she went through all the stages to acquire the skills that made her a sports icon not only in her home country.

But Megan Rapinoe is much more than "just" a soccer, for she has become a personality whose role model function is based on clear opinion, social commitment and intrepidity.

Sport, fashion, authenticity

The fact that she also became a "brand" is something she deserves, because "woman" does not live on soccer money alone, even if she became a top earner. Compared to her male colleagues in the German Bundesliga, where a Mr Alaba is currently trying to get 25 million a year from Bavaria to extend his contract, or the English Premier League, there is still a lot of catching up to do, but the salary is quite decent, is silver-plated and perhaps even gold-plated by advertising, and her fashion brand is making a good profit. Nevertheless, Rapinoe has made a high-profile effort to improve pay for women in soccer.

Opinion-forming and consistent

But this is now almost a secondary point, why Megan Rapinoe receives so much adoration and admiration. Because the girl from the small town, who grew up in a rather restricted, sheltered and loving religious environment, became a self-confident woman who professes her sexual identity (lesbian) and fights against racism, prejudice and discrimination of all kinds with great commitment. Her popularity as a mega sportswoman certainly helps her as a ticket, for example to discuss with politicians such as presidential candidate Joe Biden or to appear on highly regarded talk shows, but all this would have no effect if she did not have a crystal-clear opinion on social issues, which can be paraphrased more or less as follows Fairness, equality and truthfulness are values she demands.

Measured against this, she could not help but announce in the run-up to the 2019 World Cup that she would decline an invitation to the White House if she won the title. Megan Rapinoe became world champion, she did not enter the White House.

Megan Rapinoe's career is a plea for a self-determined life.
